Chicago, IL — The Chicago community is mourning the tragic loss of Mr. Steven Jones, 62, and Mrs. Felicia Jones, 58, who passed away following a devastating automobile accident on the evening of May 22, 2013.
The collision occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of South Halsted Street and West 95th Street. According to the Chicago Police Department, Mr. Jones was driving when their vehicle was struck by another car reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed. Emergency responders transported the couple to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where they were later pronounced deceased. The driver of the other vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains under investigation.
Steven and Felicia were pillars of their neighborhood, remembered by friends and family as a couple who radiated kindness and community spirit.
“Steven was a man of integrity,” said neighbor Harold Benson. “Even in retirement, he never stopped being the dependable person we all turned to. He looked after everyone on this block.”
Mrs. Jones, known to generations of students as “Mrs. J,” was a passionate educator who devoted over 30 years to teaching in the Chicago Public Schools system. “She had a way of making every student feel seen,” said former colleague Janet Wells. “Her classroom was a safe place for kids who needed encouragement and guidance. She truly believed in them.”
Friends also recall the couple’s shared love of family gatherings, Sunday church services, and volunteering at local food drives. “They were a team in every sense of the word,” said their niece, Carla Jones. “They taught us what love, faith, and partnership look like. Losing them both at once is almost too much to bear.”
Chicago Police spokesperson Lt. Carla Mendoza emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. “This is a heartbreaking case,” she said. “We are committed to uncovering the circumstances that led to this tragic event.”
Steven and Felicia Jones are survived by their daughter, Janet Luna Jones-Brooks, who is asking for privacy during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements are being finalized and will be announced in the coming days. In the meantime, community members have begun leaving flowers and candles near the crash site as a public tribute to the couple’s memory.
